Crystal Pool

Crystal Plaza|Shanghai |300M2|Client: ShangHai Renyao.& Renlu Real Estate Co.|2019

Created for the grand opening of Crystal Plaza, a landmark mixed-use complex in the core international business district of Qiantan, Pudong, Shanghai, the Crystal Pool is a creative public space installation designed for children, teenagers and adults. It enriches immersive play experiences, encourages social interaction among visitors, revitalizes the overall commercial precinct, and attracts city-wide foot traffic.

The project integrates street-level public space, vertical stair corridors leading to the commercial rooftop, and the open event plaza at the stair base. With visually striking sculptural design, it connects two vertical elevations and redefines the staircase as a vibrant public activity space rather than a mere passage.

Irregular“waterdroplet” units are scattered along the stairs as compact multipurpose seating, offering views over the central cross plaza. These layered droplets flow down to the lower plaza and form an artistic “water pool”. Featuring obstacle paths and a conceptual virtual swimming pool, this playful landscape delivers rich interactive experiences for kids and teens. Combining active play and quiet rest areas, the installation meets allage usage requirements and enhances the value of this urban commercial public space.

We deployed our self-developed structural detailing calculation software to unlock a wide range of non-conventional equipment forms and structures. Meanwhile, we adopted new TPU material featuring anti-aging, color-fade resistant properties suitable for outdoor environments, alongside impact-resistant and cut-proof safety craftsmanship. This enables the installation to fully deliver the design intent while maintaining all essential functional requirements.
