Cuckoo Tree House

The Cuckoo Treehouse is a permanent indoor installation designed to beautify the atrium of the children’s commercial zone at Crystal Plaza, Qiantan, Pudong, Shanghai — an emerging international business hub. It aims to create a mall atmosphere that encourages play and social interaction among children.

Spanning the atrium connecting two floors, the design forms a visual link between children’s entertainment facilities and kid-focused retail spaces on both levels. These playful, human-centric installations stack vertically, resembling a landmark treehouse built from layered cuckoo houses.

The design concept leverages existing columns within the atrium; a series of house-shaped elements wrap around these cylinders for decorative effect. At the very top of the treehouse sits a simple yet punctual cuckoo, which pops out every hour to chime and delight children. We have carefully selected vivid, energetic colours to make the treehouse visible to all visitors approaching the children’s atrium and enhance its visibility from all viewpoints.

Hongyang is responsible for shop drawings design, fabrication and installation.

Impact resistant and cut resistant design is applied to ensure the safety of children. Self-developed hourly chime device, the cuckoo reaches out of the birdhouse, chirps 5 times and then goes back to the birdhouse on the hour in business time.
