The Rooster is a temporary interactive public installation custom-built for Spring Festival celebrations. As an immersive, walkable architectural structure embedded with diverse functional spaces, it is fully open to the public to enhance visitor engagement and social interaction. The artwork served as the key feature of Xintiandi’s grand 2017 Spring Festival celebration.
As an award-winning commercial district and iconic urban landmark for shopping, entertainment and leisure in Shanghai, Xintiandi commissioned 100architects to deliver the core festive installation for its bustling retail street, transforming the public realm into a vibrant seasonal art exhibition platform.
Rooted in Chinese zodiac traditions, this rooster-themed installation was created for the Year of the Rooster Spring Festival. Drawing lessons from past Xintiandi projects, it was designed not only for viewing but also for public interaction. It invites visitors to explore and build connections between people and the structure. Transformed from static sculpture into an engaging interactive building, it delivers immersive fun. Like a rooster catching eyes, it acts as a striking focal point to gather crowds.
To maximize visual impact at Xintiandi, we combined 2D graphics with 3D structures to create an illusion that the 3D form emerges from a 2D canvas. The installation guides visitors through a vivid, colourful journey immersed in Chinese culture and Year of the Rooster motifs. It offers a one-of-a-kind experience that leaves a lasting impression on all guests.
